Guide to the National Wildlife Refuges by Laura Riley, William Riley
Nature and Ecology Editor's Recommended Book, 08/01/97:
For travelers interested in seeking out wild animals without having to enter the deep wilderness, there is no better resource than this. It will guide you to some 225 federal preserves across the United States, from Rhode Island's postage-stamp-sized Ninigret to Alaska's 19.5 million-acre Arctic reserves, both homes to a wide range of wildlife. Laura and William Riley, who helped found the Raptor Trust in the 1970s, have an easygoing style that balances their sometimes overwhelmingly exhaustive cataloging of the nation's wild creatures. Their useful book ought to make a lot of readers head for the nearest wildlife refuge--every state has at least one--and take a look for themselves.
The publisher, Macmillan General Reference :
The only sourcebook for the nation's wildlife refuges, a system that is now even larger than the National Park System.
Booknews, Inc. , 08/01/93:
This revised and expanded version of the Rileys' acclaimed 1979 guide reflects the many changes in the refuge system, with over 100 new refuges opened, others closed, and the land and wildlife composition of most dramatically evolved. With details of the flora and fauna of each refuge and helpful tips on trip planning and preparation, this comprehensive source describes refuges for travelers and naturalists alike. Wild France : A Traveller's Guide (Sierra Club Natural Traveler) by Douglas Botting
My Comments:
Outdoor activities range from hiking to camping and bird watching in a guide that details activities in out-of-the-way locations in France. Like the other books in this series, it focuses on the outdoor splendor in 9 different regions. This guide's maps, activities keys to regions, and numerous small color photos sets it apart from any other guide.
Wild Ireland : A Traveller's Guide (Sierra Club Natural Traveler) by Brendan Lehane
Midwest Book Review :
Outdoor activities range from walking and fishing to camping and bird watching in a title which focuses on Ireland's natural wonders. A few titles have presented color photos of terrain and many feature travel advice for touring destinations; but few provide much of any information on Ireland's wilderness areas. This guide's maps, activities keys to regions, and numerous small
color photos sets it apart from any other guide.
Wild Italy (Sierra Club Natural Traveler) by Tim Jepson
Travel Editor's Recommended Book, 01/16/97:
Most tours of Italy take in a Renaissance church or 10, visit piazzas and Michelangelo statues, then add lots of espresso, pasta and wine for a lovely, standard Italian holiday. But Italy has other, less well-known treasures. The countryside is stunningly gorgeous, with scads of glorious mountains, ancient forests, more than 1500 lakes, miles of sandy coastline and some of the best hiking in the world. And Jepson does a remarkable job of providing all the practical information you need to partake and enjoy.
Booknews, Inc. , 11/01/94:
This entry into the Sierra Club Natural Traveler Series highlights nature oriented sights in Italy that include scenic walks, climbing sites, canoeing sites, and bird-watching trips. While this series offer minimal details about where to stay and eat, it does provide good information about many often overlooked natural sites of the country. Text is nicely complemented with color
photographs. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
